Korean Celebrity Plastic Surgery

By

Korean celebrity plastic surgery rates are making headlines throughout Asia and around the globe. It seems as through every Korean woman who has risen to fame has gone under the knife for one of any number of procedures, from breast implantation to eyelid surgery. The popularity of celebrity cosmetic procedures has left many to wonder what is at the root of this trend. Some attribute the rise to the number of highly skilled surgeons in Korea. Others wonder if it is the expanding exposure to other cultures and standards of beauty. Many, however, think that this is no more common in Korea just more widely reported.

Double Eyelid Surgery

One of the procedures most commonly undergone by celebrities in Korea is the double eyelid surgery. This is a surgery in which a small incision is made to create a crease in the eyelid, giving it more definition. It is a minimally invasive surgery that has been common for many years among men and women of all ages. After the surgery, the eyes may appear larger and the patient, younger. More celebrities in Korea have undergone this procedure than can be named.

Rhinoplasty

Another common procedure is Rhinoplasty, or a nose job. This surgery is used to change the size or shape of the patient’s nose. It is more invasive than the abovementioned eyelid surgery, and depending on the amount of work done, can require a great deal of recovery time. Changing the shape of a nose can dramatically alter the appearance of the patient’s face. The ever changing nose of Seo In Young is seen by many as emblematic of the plastic surgery problem among Korean celebrities, with many online photo galleries charting her oft evolving face.

Why The Surge

Some posit that the skill of Korean plastic surgeons is responsible for this trend. Patients from around the world flock to Korea to take advantage of the advances the country has made in cosmetic surgery technology. There has been an explosion in the number of doctors who perform these procedures in recent years, even some who make house calls. Increased competition among physicians has led to a reduction in the cost of the most commonly performed procedures.

Others still say that celebrities in Korea are no more likely to undergo cosmetic procedures than anyone anywhere else in the world, they are just more willing to talk about it. Many actresses in Hollywood avail themselves of the help a doctor can offer, whether through breast implants, Botox injections, or nose reshaping. Tabloids constantly speculate about who has had work done, but few stars readily admit to it. Critics point out that the apparent difference in the number of surgeries could simply be attributed to differing levels of cultural acceptance in discussing them.

Speculating on Korean celebrity plastic surgery has become a leading topic of conversation for those who follow the lives of celebrities. Whether this is an issue that is confined to Korea can be debated, as can the significance fans assign to it.

Here's a video that talks about the Korean population's fascination with cosmetic enhancement procedures.

What do you think is the driver behind this trend?

  • Koreans are high maintenance
  • Koreans want to look European
  • It's not just Koreans
  • I don't know or care enough to know

It boggles my mind when ppl state that Asians get surgery because they want to look like us white ppl. When in fact, if you actually KNOW asians or talk to asians the REALITY is that they just want too look better. I'm so offended.. that's like me when i went to rhinoplasty and got nose reduction it wasn't so i wanted too look more asian. It's so funny so me because if a white girl gets her nose smaller, draws her eyeliner to make her eyes smaller and almond shape, and dyes her hair black, people never say "oh she is a wannabe asian"

I'm not sure if we white ppl are that concieted, worried or just think too much.

There has been a study showing for Asians and they had to pick who they wanted too look like the The white girl never got picked. It was either the Asian girls or the Mixed Japanese/Brazilian models. I can understand for us to say they wanna look white IF no asians had double eyelids.. or if no asians had big noses. But the fact is... they wanna look like their other beautiful asian people. Vivian Hsu of Taiwan and Song Hye Kyo of Korea are very popular girls. And asians obviously rather look like them then... Scarlet or Anne Hathaway. Asians just wanna look like the other asians who are naturally born with beautiful almond eyes. When they do surgery.. the majority never ask for deep set thick buggley baldging eyelids.
